The year is ...

Welcome to PhantasyStar.Online!

The time is:
@000

(internet / .beat time)

This website documents which game is playable or not.
(You can thank StopKillingGames
initiative for making me do this.)

However, I have one simple rule:
There will be no links!
You'll have to search the contents yourself and
I hold no responsilbity for any trouble you get yourself into.

PSOv1 and PSOv2 (Dreamcast)
Offline Playable
Online Playable
There are multiple methods to play online:
DreamPi (Raspberry Pi) , BBA (Hardware), Flycast(Emulator), Codebreaker (Cheat software)
Servers to look for:
Sylverant, Ragol

PSOv2 (PC)
Offline Playable
Online Playable
Servers to look for:
Sylverant, Ragol

PSOv3 (Gamecube)
Offline Playable
Online Playable
Console can be played unmodded, softmodded, and hardmodded.
There are multiple methods to play online:
Modem/BBA (Hardware), ActionReplay (Cheat software), Dolphin (Emulator)
Also playable on other hardware:
Wii and Wii-U (also Wii mini but not recommended)
Servers to look for:
Schtserv, Sylverant, Ragol

PSOv3 (Original Xbox)
Offline Playable
Online Playable
Unmodded console recommended
By using a service called insignia you can connect to a community replaced Xbox Live server.
After that, you can finally connect to:
Schtserv, Sylverant, Ragol

PSOEp3 (Gamecube)
Offline Playable
Online Playable but ...
Due to the game's mechanics being server-side rather than client side, it's not 100 percent functional in terms of making all the cards work properly.
You'll have to seek the PSOGamecube Discord server to see the status so far.
There is even a fan patch which could complicate this whole situation for new users depending on what server you want to connect to.

PSOBB (PC)
Offline N/A
PSOBB is designed to be an online-only game.
There is a way however to download the server client and host your own personal server. Last I've tried it took a lot of my computer's resources. Not worth it in my opinion.
Online Playable
If you want the most easiest installation and quick-to-play, then this is the way to go.
Keep in mind there are servers that'll provide different experiences.
Vanilla: Ephinea
Custom: Ulitma, Destiny
And yes, you can play it on the SteamDeck!

PSU and PSU:AOTI (PS2)
Offline Playable
Online Unplayable
I'll be honest, it's not worth getting it to work due to lack of content and weak hardware.
(I've played on the official servers on this hardware before and seeing the weapons taking a long time to load is unacceptable.)
Just play the PC verison instead.

PSU and PSU:AOTI (360)
Offline Playable but ...
PSU's Story (called Episode 1) is avalible but PSU:AOTI's (known as Episode 2) is not.
Online Unplayable
Other than lack of content. I believe Xbox Live is needed in order to connect to a server. Not worth it.
Again, just play the PC verison instead.

PSU and PSU:AOTI (PC)
Offline Playable but ...
If you are guessing it's the classic DRM that'll be the road block, no, it's an Anti-cheat software. For an offline mode? Yeah ... it's really stupid. Since the anti-cheat can no longer connect to the server you'll have to look for an abandonware sites to bypass it.
Online This will be split into two factors.
If you only care about gameplay, it's
Playable.
If you only care about story, it's Unplayable.
Besides offline's story, the official servers had additional story and even a whole new episode.
The only way to experience that is watching old YouTube videos.
So far there is only one server, Clementine.

PSPo1 (PSP)
Offline Playable
Online Playable with Klink Kai?
Obviously most players prefer playing the later game due to having a lot more content.

PSZ (DS)
Offline Playable
Online Playable
However, this isn't easy as "connect to a private server." You'll need to tinker with your router and finally be ready to share your friends code with others you want to play with.

PSPo2 (PSP)
Offline Playable
Online Playable?
Honestly most players have moved on towards PSPo2i since it's the game that has more content. But ever since the English patch is out, there really is no need to bother. Get ready to transfer your character data (Japanese copy of PSPo2 required.)

PSPo2i (PSP) [Japanese]
Offline Playable (with English Patch)
Online Playable (with English Patch)
Your friends and yourself will need to use the same VPN software to play together.
Can be played on emulation or PSP hardware
.

PSO2 Classic (XboxOne/XboxSeriesS&X/PS4/PS5/PC)
[Global server]

Offline N/A, it's an online-only game.
Online Playable but ...
Other than nickpicking a few missing endgame gear. Pretty much almost all the content is there minus collabs. The biggest problem is how the devs are handling the game as of now. They put a permanent boost as a way to signal that they are finished with the game and is only focusing on PSO2NGS*.
The team behind PSU's private server is working on PSO2 Classic, however I don't know how SEGA's legal team will react.
*Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis

PSO2es (Mobile) [Japanese]
Offline N/A, it's online-only becuase both PSO2es and PSO2 connects to the same server. Account and character data are shared.
Online Playable if you can read Japanese?
There is an english patch from Github.

PSNova (PSVita) [Japanese]

I'll be honest, I do not own the hardware.
I have no idea if it's playable or not.
And yes, there is a translation patch from Github,
but I don't know how complete it is.

Idola (Mobile)

Both Japanese and English versions are shut down.
No offline patch which means it's
unplayable.

Phantasy Star I, II, III, IV

This is tricky ...

I could shove a classic "Under construction" image right here
but I at least have something to say right now.

For the PC on Steam platform, SEGA, for some reason,
had
delisted their classic collections. All 60 games,
including Phantasy Star II, III, and IV. Why? I don't know.

For now seek for the console versions for the SEGA collections.

Other than the two classics which has all four titles:
-Phantasy Star Collection (Sega Saturn) [Japanese]
-Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 32:
Phantasy Star Complete Collection (PS2) [Japanese]

The most affortable option for now,
that has all four titles, has to be:
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
(Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for PAL regions)
(Xbox 360 and PS3)
Just be ready to find out how to unlock the first game.

There are other collections that'll have PS II, III, & IV,
but will not have the first game which is PS I.
If this is not a problem then you are set.

It's been a long time I've played it so I cannot
speak on the emulation.

I still own the GBA cartridge, it's okay.
(It only has PS I, II, and III)

General advice:

-If you are planning to play PSO1 on the console then seriously
consider having methods on backing up your save data.
Memory card corruption can happen and it did to me for both
official and 3rd party memory cards.
The method I use for PSOGC is using a soft modded Wii
and using app called GCMM, it's pretty quick
when you get used to it.

-Depeneding on certain games that is hosted on a private server,
avoid using websites like PSO-World and Fandom dot com.
Check if the server already has it's own wiki first.
Ask around the message boards and Discord.

-If you have to use Reddit to ask questions,
be very specific on what platform and server you are on.

Example: "How do I get Black Ring?"
The BB answer is "Do minimal kills in VH to Ult on TTF quest."
The GC/OGXbox answer is "Do a lot of MA1/2 quests to get
10k kills in total, then also get 10 hearts and 12 masters from
other players who had 10k kills, and finally do Beach Laughter,
speak with a lone rappy, get Black Ring."
So imagine a GC player getting a BB information, the GC player
will be wasting hours until they learn they can't get it.

-Yes, as of now, the most popular PSO1 server happens to be
vallina with little to no custom additions. If you find it to be
grindy and time consuming, I ugre you to either be patient
or wait for EXP boost via week boost or events.

-There is no shame on wanting to play on older versions of PSO1.
Ignore what other tells what you should be playing.
Just go what you feel. If the Dreamcast version makes you happy
then go with that.

-If you have played PSO1 before and you took a long break from it
and you wanted to play it again fresh. Please pick a different class.
If you pick a HUmar again and your arugment is "nostalgia"
then that is a pretty weak reason to pick the same class.
Picking a different class allows you to get a whole new perspecitve
on the game and even enhances the experience a lot better.
Mind you, that I'm not being an elitist about this because
an elitist would tell you to pick a specific class, section ID with
a certain mat build, then tell you what mag stats to go along with,
and finally what gear you should use.
All I'm suggesting, is pick a different class, that's it.

- Give PSO1's Challenge mode a try. It's a wonderful and
unique experince that goes back to the roots on what
makes PSO1 great. Being reasourceful, communication,
positioning, analyzing your opponents' movements and attacks,
and of course, getting an ES weapon (S-Rank weapon).
